Heritage at risk. Single-family housing of the Modern Movement in Europe

Round table of presentation of the European project Artists in Architecture. Re-activating Modern European Houses. This project, through a series of interventions and artistic residences in single-family houses, aims to contribute to the re-valorization of this fragile architectural heritage. In the case of Barcelona, the residence will take place in the Casa Vilaró (1928-30) by the architect Sixte Illescas (1903-1986), a guest space of the Barcelona Architecture Week 2019.

Marc Arnal, architect, tenured professor and academic director of the Salle – Ramon Llull University and author of the thesis “The art of living, houses by artists in Cadaqués, Concrete art as a generator of architecture, Peter Harnden and Lanfranco Bombelli”
Ariadna Perich, architect and coordinator of the “Artists in Architecture” project from the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, which will act as moderator.

The project “Artists in Architecture, Re-activating Modern European Houses” is an initiative promoted by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, together with Bozar and UNINA that aims to promote collaboration between artists, architects, students, professionals in the field of heritage and public in general and at the same time open an intergenerational and interdisciplinary dialogue that helps define a contemporary vision and the future approach of conservation, restoration and reuse of a heritage as delicate and at risk as the single-family home.

Through a series of artists’ residences organized in a selection of six unique houses located in Tervuren and Uccle (Belgium), Praiano and Pompeii (Italy), Bucharest (Romania) and Barcelona, the project aims to stimulate reflection and debate about the great heritage value, tangible and intangible, of much of the European modern domestic architecture, which has been built by the most avant-garde architects of its time or inhabited by protagonists of Europe’s intellectual effervescence at various moments in its history .
